QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR WEB DEVELOPER

Can your website developer answer these question?

Once the site goes live and I need to make future changes, can I do this myself? Most websites should be built around a CMS or content management system platform that will allow you to make your own amends. This will save you heaps of time and money if you can do it yourself. Make sure that the web developer will be building your site using an open source CMS ( such as WordPress ), that does not lock you into their contacts. This is wide spread amongst many web development companies and if you fall prey to this, you can end up paying monthly fees ( never disclosed to you) for using their CMS platform.

  1. Will the design of the website be customised or based on a pre-existing template. Many businesses will be happy with a standard template design, but if you require something a little more complex with thought put into the design process, then it should be customised based on a detailed brief. Don’t try and go the cheaper standard version to save a few dollars now. Having a customised design will make you look unique and set your business apart.
  2. What is their portfolio like? Can they show you their most recent work and perhaps some examples of sites they have developed for other businesses in the same industry. Don’t be afraid to call a few of their past clients and get their opinion on the work performed.
  3. What are the hosting fees like? Can they organise the hosting and where will it be based and what type of security does it offer? Ideally if your business is here in Australia, it should be hosted here. Also, many web developers charge outrageous monthly hosting fees saying they are necessary for web maintenance and updates. This is unnecessary and you really need to pay a small fee every year for hosting. Don’t get ripped off in this space.
  4. Will my site be worked on internally or will the designs be out sourced? Make sure you work with a developer who will be doing your  designs. Having them out sourced to a freelancer can compromise the designs and entire development process.
  5. Do I get training with my CMS? And, if I need help on an on going basis what are the hourly rates?
  6. What is the timeline for my project? Try to set solid project milestones to avoid delays and budget blowouts. Delays can easily turn a web relationship sour, so adhering to a schedule will be the best philosophy.
  7. Will they design and develop a site using search engine friendly techniques? Having your website ranking well on Google is great feeling and it will lead to am increase in web traffic.
  8. Will the developers install Google Analytics into the site to make web analysis easy?
  9. Are there any hidden costs that I should be aware of down the track, such as hosting, CMS monthly fees, intellectual property fees etc.
  10. Are they going to be putting any social media links into the site? You will be needing at least a Facebook and Twitter link on your home page. Social media marketing are considered the building blocks of marketing campaigns and your web developer should have a firm understanding of this.
  11. Will there be a contact form on the website and where does the captured information on this form go to? Will they help set up an email newsletter system?
  12. Can I come in for face to face meeting to make web amends? This is great of you prefer that kind of contact rather than emailing everything.
  13. Who owns the intellectual property once the site is complete? Who owns the images and do I have to pay a yearly fee for these?
  14. Can you put a blog on my site and will you be able to train me in how to use the blog.
  15. Will you help me in the writing of the site content or do you have people that can help me with this. Content marketing is great for your Google rankings, and all web developers MUST be able to provide a copywriter for you most important landing pages.
  16. How long does it take to design and build a site? Most developers will say five to seven weeks from initial meeting to site deployment.
  17. With the CMS, which areas can I edit and which are static? Are you comfortable not being able to amend the static areas of the website?
  18. How much do are you going to charge for web design? Better web designs will charge for their work and design expertise, whilst cheap quotes will result in websites that have had corners cut with many short cuts taken. If they quote a fixed price, ask them exactly what this includes.
  19. Will you be developing up a set of Wireframes for me to look at before any design work starts – Wireframes allow the user to see the site structure. Like architectural drawings of a house.

Why m. websites are no good

1. Redirects they are bad for SEO

Google likes 1 URL per website and having a redirect from your main site to a m dot website is just plain bad for search engine optimisation. Google mentions this on their forum so be warned about the SEO implications of an m dot strategy.

2. It Slows The Experience Down

With mobile phone and3G delays, you can be waiting up to 1.5 seconds for the redirect to an m-dot. Users are time poor and will not like this part of the process at all. Speed is the key to winning new clients online and this will certainly count against you. Conversion rates need to be high in the mobile world especially if there is ecommerce involved. M dot redirects in regards to speed is certainly going to count against you.

3. To Many Subdomains

If your online marketing strategy is to have a website that serves each digital segment; such as iphones, tablets and the raft of new technologies yet to come out in 2013/14, how are you going to accommodate these markets. One domain for each device wont cut it and will end up with your URL in a complete mess. Just think about how many sub domains you could have to accommodate each screen/device.

4. It’s not Good for Social Media

Redirects for URLs are hated by social media platforms and cause a lot of confusion when sharing sites. Think about the what happens if a friend shares your m. site and another shares your actual desktop site. These types of confusing URL’s will cause site abandonment, decreased user engagement and an overall increase in web bounce rates.

5. Duplicate Content.

There is no way of getting around this and Google has made it apparently so. The best reach results will come from 1 website with 1 address and 1 page of content. This is across all devices and all platforms. A mobile web site having its own unique domain name (e.g. m.yourbusinessname.com.au) will cause issues as you will be having 2 separate domains with 1 set of content. This is content duplication and you can get your site penalised. This is a horrible experience and is something that should be taken very seriously.

What options are available?

If you’re remotely thinking about launching m. site, bin the idea. There are a number of really good and simple options available to you which should be considered.
The best one that comes to mind is Responsive Web Design, that is a site that automatically resizes, depending on the screen size and device. Its simple, easy and most web design companies should be able to tell you about this. The concept has been around for a few years now and will be the way forward with so many new technologies and platforms emerging. Make sure you ask your web developers about this and scrap any thoughts about m dot websites.

Awesome Ways To Grow Your Website Traffic

1. Have you Discovered How Good Google Tools Are?

Google is your one stop shop for all your web analytics tools, to help you measure many website statistics. Analytics is easy to install and will help you gauge the amount of web traffic you are receiving. Ask your web developer to hook you up with a Google account and once you have analytics code, they can pop it into the site for you.
Google has an absolute stockpile of helpful tools that will allow you to measure and track how well your website is working. Plus it is all for free. It does take some time getting used to it, but once you get the hang of it, there will be no stopping you.
GA or Google Analytics is your first port of call in measuring your website traffic and it is from this point onwards that you can start to make onsite adjustments.

2. Give Your Website a Design Overhaul

Tired looking, out dated websites are a traffic killer. Speak with a web design agency about changing your websites look, by implementing the latest design styles. Ideally, you should be thinking about giving your website a design overhaul every 2 years. This may sound like overkill but having a website that looks slick and modern, will give you the online edge over your competition.

3. Grow your Company Blog

Blogs are a great way to generate website traffic and in turn bring readers through to your website. Think about a blog strategy, where you write 1 to 2 blog articles per week. Well written corporate blogs that generate interest will be one of your most powerful marketing tools.

4. Has Your Company Got a Social Media Presence?

Having a social media presence online is now a ‘must do’ for all companies. Promote your business and bring people through to your website using the many social media platforms that are now so popular. Pick the right platform where your customers are likely to be and start posting comments, articles, videos, webinars and tweets.

5. Start a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Campaign

This without a doubt is the best way to grow your website traffic. Get a SEO company to search for keywords with the highest search volume that relate to your business and start optimising these. Google is a fickle beast with constant algorithm changes, so expect your results to fluctuate. Attaining and keeping this priority position on the search engine will bring in those customers.

Guaranteed SEO – Why We Don’t Offer An SEO Guarantee

Many businesses would have been approached by SEO firms who over promise and make exaggerated SEO guarantees. Putting ignorance aside, firms have absolutely no right what so ever in guaranteeing any kind of ranking. In fact, if they promise to get you to the top of page 1, then I would be very worried at the tactics and techniques they will be employing to get you there. Guarantees regarding SEO just dont happen and it is the intention of this blog is to outline the man reasons why we never place a guarantee for our SEO service.

Whilst, we are able to show you the great SEO results we have been able to achieve for our clients, we will never under any circumstances put a 100% guarantee on the SEO work we do.

Again and I need to reiterate this point, all the SEO work that we have done in the past and that we continue to do for our clients is totally Google compliant. That is, we never engage in ‘dodgy’ SEO practices, as we always work within the framework of what is considered SEO best practice. So whilst we may not be able to 100% guarantee a top ranking, we will certainly try our very best to get you there.

Why We Don’t Offer An SEO Guarantee: Google Has Total Control.

The absolute main reason why it is impossible to guarantee your SEO service, is that you are dealing with an external 3rd party. That is, Google. They are forever refining, remodeling and changing their ranking algorithm, so to predict the outcome of an SEO campaign is not an exact science. Whilst we are able to determine best practice search engine optimisation solutions for the moment, these results can and do change frequently. Hence, guaranteeing results on a shifting playing field is essentially impossible.

As a company director, I make a point of telling potential SEO clients that we can, based on historical results, get businesses an awesome Google ranking. But and I reaper this, we make absolutely zero guarantees about this.?

Google Has The Last Say?

Any SEO company that knows what it is doing should have a firm idea on what it takes to get a website ranked. They should constantly monitoring your rankings and as soon as any tweak in the ranking algorithm happens, they will do what is necessary to restore your ranking, if it has dropped.

Basically, the engineers at Google are hard at work, looking at ways to improve the search results. And if your website has been impacted by a change implemented by these engineers, there is little anyone outside of Google can do about this. Hence, the SEO guarantee becomes null and void.

Sure we can, once things have settled down, look at ways to restore your great page position. However, this takes time as we need to reverse engineer the algorithm and restart a new SEO strategy. Guaranteeing a place after a massive change, means that your are lying to the client to secure their business, which is totally unethical.

No SEO Guarantees Means We Tell You How It Is.

As a business owner, you should be prepared to pay a fair amount for quality SEO work. Trying to penny pinch when it comes to your online marketing, is a bad business move and will come back to haunt you when you are getting no online results. At Hopping Mad we employ account managers, SEO technicians, web copywriters, designers who all work together as a tight knit team, so that your website will have the best chance of online success.

Over 17 years of design and SEO experience means that although we never offer any SEO guarantees, we certainly know what we are doing. Our years of SEO and web design experience means that we know all the SEO mistakes and do everything we can to avoid them.

Please Judge us on our results and past work.

The true reason that we never offer an SEO guarantee, is that we are confident in our abilities. Sure, we may come off as a little smug, but the proof as they say is in the pudding. We can show you 1000’s of web pages that we have been able to optimise and rank; all without a guarantee or long term contract. Clients stay with us for 1 thing and 1 thing only; we are able to deliver on our work.

Generally speaking firms that offer SEO placement guarantees have a limited lifespan. Because they have been unable to deliver on their promise, customers desert them in droves and many find themselves out of business.

You are the best person to judge us. Come on in for an appointment in our studio in Sydney and speak with one of our account managers who can show you that to rank highly on the search engines, does not require contracts, over prices fees and blatant lying. It requires hard work and a well thought out and planned SEO campaign, that only a SEO company like Hopping Mad Designs is able to offer.

What to Do If You Are Offered a Guaranteed SEO Ranking.

– hang up the phone
– delete the email, in fact don’t even read the email
– cancel the contract
– leave the meeting

How to Reduce Ecommerce Cart Abandonment

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR SHOPPING CART ABANDONMENT RATES FAST!

Know the path your customers take. Customers can get distracted very easily. They go to other parts of your website, close their browser by mistake, pop up windows, internal phone calls, the list goes on and on. Basically, anything can grab the attention of the online shopper away from making the actual purchase. You have to minimise the friction points that will trap customers, put speed bumps in their way, keeping them from the buy button.

1) Ecommerce Shipping Costs. Show these costs upfront. Never be afraid of what they will think. It is a lot better to be transparent from the beginning. If they think it is too expensive they wont buy anyway, no matter where they are in the conversion process. So it’s best to be very clear about these in advance. Be upfront, just like Ebay is in their approach to shipping costs.

2) Hidden Fess. No one likes hidden fees. Especially when it comes to shopping online. This is why banks are always drumming the words ‘no hidden fees’ in their commercials and on their website. Be very clear throughout your ecommerce site that there are absolutely no hidden fees what so ever. Getting they buyer to make a purchase and then slugging them with a hidden fee, will just loose you credibility and trust. Most likely, they will buy elsewhere.

3) Account creation. Never force a sign in. Let them check out as a guest and give them the option, if they like, of creating an account. If a customer wants to buy from you, let them. Making them create an account prior to this may annoy them. Give the customer the freedom to make their purchase and if you want to get their details, give them the option of creating an account ONLY after they buy. That is, after the transaction has been fully completed. Don’t put unnecessary hurdles in their path. If they have spent money with you, and are happy with the product, then chances are they will want to create an account. A passive approach to this is the best option. Test this out and see the difference this makes to buy conversion rates.

4) Sell Effectively. Place urgency on the product and entice your customers to buy before stocks run out. Have limited supply buttons or stock clearance icons to get the users to make that purchase. Tell customers to buy now rather than later. Put a deadline on it.

5) Limit the amount of steps needed to buy. How many steps are there from purchasing decision to purchasing success? When you buy a product from a retail outlet the process is generally very simple. The same should apply to your ecommerce shopping cart. Keep the steps down to a maximum of 2 for better sales conversions. The less pages for the check out process, the better. One page for the product and check out page is ideal. A rule of thumb is the more number of steps you need to do, the greater the likelihood of site abandonment.

6) Payment Options. Display the cards that you have. Don’t feature credit cards that you don’t accept. Also, a good idea is to feature third party security features to push the trust and safety factor.

7) Track Your Customers Down. If a customer is on your website but doesn’t buy, there is a good chance that if you market to them, they may come back to make a purchase. This is called remarketing and is becoming more popular. You can organise this via google remarketing. What happens is that when a customer leaves your site a ‘cookie’ is added to their browser and this is tags them to say they have abandoned the cart. From there visual prompts will pop when they search on other sites to remind them to come back to your site. Google remarketing is linked to your adwords campaign.

8) Is your page loading fast enough? You want people to get into the site as quick as possible. Check all images, text and tables to ensure that load times are speedy. Keep file sizes small. Remember website speed has a direct relationship to online conversion rates. The slower the web speed the higher the website exit rates and vice versa.

9) Fear of infection. People are becoming increasingly fearful of online viruses and internet security, especially when it comes to handing over credit card details. People want reassurance that the information they provide you is safe and secure. Display secure icons near all call to action buttons. Third party SSL certificates, and authentication services are the best solutions for this. If you have an ecommerce site then you should already have a SSL certificate. Make sure this is clearly displayed.

10) Set up web funnels. Implement Google analytics to see where customers are leaving your site. Focus on pages that users are exiting the most and try to improve these on page conversions. Either through graphics or content.

How to avoid being annoying with social media marketing

1. Post when necessary

Followers on your social media platforms know you are there, so stay current but avoid over posting. That is, posting 2 to 3 times a day. I have personally seen on my LinkedIn account a guy who posts around 6-10 times a day. This is frustrating and very annoying. Although I haven’t deleted him, I never really pay much attention to what he is saying anymore. It’s total over kill and it’s just diluting his main core message.

Post gradually, this way you will stay in the minds of people, but are respectful of their social media space.

2. Keep your content marketing interesting

Yawning at social media postings is a brand killer. The best way to smash your brand is to publish boring, mechanical content. Speak to a copywriter, with web and social media skills on how best to position your company and post accordingly. At Hopping Mad Designs we have a team of copy experts that implement the following strategies that will ensure your business is getting the MOST out of what social media can offer:

Brand Differentiation
– SEO – search engine optimisation
Social Media Marketing (Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn etc)
– Infographics, that are designed by graphic experts
– Email Marketing Campaigns
– Link Generation from the best possible sources
– Video Filming and Marketing
– News Aggregator Strategies
– Google Analytics and Reporting
– RSS and Article Marketing

3. Use your feedback to promote yourself.

Never be afraid of the public. They have engaged with your brand or product online and if they have something to say; whether positive or negative, you should be responding to them in a timely and very courteous manner.

Mobile and Responsive Web Design

WHAT DOES RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN MEAN?

Responsive web design means that you website will seamlessly and automatically resize itself as the screen sizes change. It’s amazing to watch and will revolutionise the business communities expectations of website viewing. No longer content with a one screen size fits all, businesses now expect to have their website easily viewable and with the best user experience possible on iphones, androids and ipads.

Who will benefit from responsive web design?

It’s a win-win situation here. Businesses will win from only having to design and develop one website; one design brief with one web agency, and paying only one fee. Users will benefit from the ultimate experience they will have from a end user perspective. They no longer have to pinch their mobile phones to enlarge the screen as this is done automatically through the responsive web design process.

Is implementing responsive web design expensive?

Think about the alternative. You would have to pay for three separate websites; one for the desktop, one for the ipad and the one for the phone. That’s 3 web design and 3 web development costs. Almost triple the headache and about the same in costs. Responsive web design facilitates this whole process into one operation, where you pay for the design and development of the website only once. Depending on the web company you choose to go with, this should not add too much to the overall project fee.

What’s the process and how does a web company do it?

The process is relatively simple. Basically, the set of wireframes that are drawn up for the main website are replicated but on a scale that would fit ipads and mobile phones. Wireframes are the websites process flows, the architectural blueprints of how the site will function and how each page relates to each other.
Once these flows and the user experience nutted out, these wireframes are then populated with graphics to add personality and style. From there it’s a simple matter of applying the html code, making sure it works and then uploading the site. Of course the user testing phase is vital to ensure that the site is responsive on all platforms.

Will my website rank on Google with Responsive Web Design?

Most certainly. If the web company knows their stuff and knows what they are doing then there is absolutely no reason why you site won’t rank on page 1 of Google. Saying that, if you are in a competitive field and the keywords you want to rank for are competitive then you may need to work with an SEO company to help you push up your rankings. Of course, working with a company like Hopping Mad Designs, means that all your search engine needs can be taken care of whilst the design and development are happening. This is the advantage of using a reputable company to wok on your site.

Mobile Phone Usage in Australia.

This comes from the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association website: ‘For the first time there is now more than one mobile service for every Australian, with 23.26 million mobile phone services in operation at 30 June 2010’.
Businesses should really take note of this figure, because if their website is not responsively designed , then they are simply missing out on the huge potential that this mobile market brings. This should be especially alarming for retailers and ecommerce website owners looking to sell products online. The main reason for this is that the easier and simpler the buying process is on the mobile phones, then the more likely will be the sale. Make the process hard, or unintuitive, this will just drive the customer away.

Do Graphics Matter?

The website visuals play a huge part in converting the online browser into a full paying customer. Websites, especially if they are going to be designed responsively, need to have clean, uncluttered graphics. Depending on the nature of the industry these graphics should have clear and very descriptive call to action buttons, making the whole user experience as easy as possible. Obviously, your web designer should be making suggestions on how to give the online profile to huge lift, as well as advice on avoiding mobile phone unfriendly technologies like flash animation or cumbersome image intensive graphics.

Why Hopping Mad Designs?

We know what it takes to design websites that are drive sales and bring in more customers. Plus we have a wealth of experience when it comes to ranking sites on Google. HOW TO CHOOSE A WEB DESIGNER IN SYDNEY

If you think for one minute that you can get away with employing a web design company that offers cheap web design packages then you are putting your business ain the hand of a bunch of amateurs and risk failure.

Finding the right web designer to handle your website design project is not as easy as it would seem, so following are a few questions you should be asking yourself before making a commitment and signing that web contract.

Does their website look professional?

This might seem like a no brainer but a web designers’ website will give you a clear idea of the future type of work you are likely to get. I have seem some sites by web designers that look absolutely disgraceful and I have also seen some  website design, that have that professional edge – knwowing the difference between the two is essential when is comes to choosing your designer.

This is the first test of the type of company you should go with. If their own site looks unprofessional, cheap and budget focused then chances are your website will go down this path. In today’s competitive online world this is very dangerous as your site MUST BE BETTER than your competitors. Go the extra mile and get the site handled by a web design team who is capable of delivering a superior online product for your business. Going with an agency purly based on price is a real disaster waiting to happen. Why? Cause I see the outcomes of this all the time by businesses who have tried to save a few dollars on the web design process.

Do you like their portfolio of work?

Looking at a web designers past work is a great way to see who you will be dealing with. It is a glimpse into their past and will highlight their work ethic and skill set. If you like what you see, then that’s a great sign.

If nothing wows or excites you, then it’s time to move on. Look at websites that are in a similar industry to yours and look at the way that the creative visuals were carried. Taking the time now to do the necessary explorative research on your web designer will save you any chance of being overly disappointed later on.

Will they lock you into a CMS Platform?

Many web companies will not tell you that they are locking you into their proprietary content management system platform. Be sure to find out if your CMS platform, is open source or proprietary. This WILL save you big hassles later on, when issues such as web amends and hosting come up. try to go with an open source platforms like: WordPress, Joomla or Magento. Please never be fooled into signing up to a web contract where you have to pay a monthly fee for the content management system – it's a massive rip off!

Would you trust them?

Ask them difficult questions. After all, you are trusting them with your business – A few good questions are:

– will any of this work be out sourced or off shored OR is it all done in house?

– are there any hidden fees or extras that I need to know about?

– can you provide me with a list of past clients that I can talk to about your work

– can you rank my website on Google? If you found your web designer online ask them about their own Google rankings – after all they SHOULD be able to rank their own website. SEO and web design are the 2 key elements that are going to help your business grow – so be really on top of this point and don't settle for anything other than the best. That is a company with a solid background in both web and SEO.

– what CMS platform will my website be designed on and are there any monthly fees associated with this?

– how many rounds of changes do they allow for each stage of the web process?

– who owns the intellectual property – images, copy, graphics, web files etc etc

Do the web designers have the necessary capabilities?

It is so important that your web designer is able to handle and produce on your sites main objectives.

If for example you are after a sales focused and conversion driven website, you need to align yourself with a designer that can show you past websites that they have been able to achieve great results for. Did the site have a positive return on investment?

Also, if your web platform requires the implementation of a more in depth and complicated design style or development process such as responsive or mobile phone web design, then make sure that your web developer is able to facilitate this, backed up fully by past results, that you can see.

Over the phone promises just don’t cut it any more. There must be actual proof backed up by facts.

Choosing the right web designer might be a demanding procedure, but the following above points should help you out and help you make the right decision for your business.
